High potential and gifted education
At Glenroy Public School, we are proud to align our approach with the NSW Department of Education’s High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) policy, which recognises the diverse strengths and needs of gifted and high potential students. We are committed to providing an inclusive and supportive learning environment that challenges and extends all learners, ensuring they are engaged, motivated, and able to reach their full potential.
Our programs are designed to identify and nurture giftedness in its many forms, reflecting the Department’s focus on catering to the whole child. By embracing a broad view of giftedness, we aim to foster excellence academically, creatively, physically, and socially, preparing students for lifelong success and wellbeing.

What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
At Glenroy Public School, we believe every student’s potential is important.
Our educators create learning experiences that challenge and extend all students, including those who demonstrate high potential, through clear instruction, flexible groupings, and tailored activities. We encourage students to think critically, approach problems with creativity, and connect ideas in meaningful ways.
We promote goal-setting and provide constructive, growth-oriented feedback to help students recognise their strengths and plan for future progress. Students who display exceptional skills have access to enrichment programs, accelerated learning options, and opportunities to take on leadership roles.
In addition, students can showcase their talents in creative and physical pursuits such as choir, school performances, sports teams, and leadership initiatives. Most importantly, our classrooms are welcoming, inclusive spaces where students feel safe to take risks, remain curious, and develop perseverance—essential skills for turning their potential into real success.
At Glenroy Public School, we foster a culture of high expectations and equitable opportunities for excellence. We recognise and celebrate talent across all areas—including intellectual, creative, physical, and social-emotional—and provide students with diverse opportunities to pursue their passions.
Students can engage in:
- Creative arts programs featuring biannual productions, choir, visual arts exhibitions, and competitions
- Sporting pathways supported by specialised sporting coaches throughout the year, as well as participation in PSSA, athletics, and representative teams
- Leadership roles including the Student Representative Council, student buddies, sports and school captains, peer mentoring, and representative opportunities
Our Learning and Support Team works closely with teachers to identify and nurture high potential from an early stage, using data, observations, and assessments. Staff participate in ongoing professional learning through AERO and HPGE frameworks to strengthen their expertise in recognising and developing student talent.
We also partner with Aurora College to offer our high-potential students access to virtual enrichment programs and specialist teachers across NSW. Additionally, our connections with local high schools support smooth transitions, early talent development, and opportunities for leadership and curriculum-specific enrichment.
At Glenroy Public School, families play a vital role in this process. Together, we create an environment where students can discover their interests and pursue their goals with confidence.
At Glenroy Public School, we’re proud to be a regional NSW school that makes sure every student has access to the same great learning opportunities as all students in the state.
Our students are involved in a range of high potential state-wide programs, including:
- PSSA representative sports competitions
- State-wide dance ensembles
- Aurora College’s online programs tailored for students demonstrating strong academic ability
We maintain strong partnerships with nearby schools via the local principal network, collaborating to exchange expertise, coordinate enrichment activities, and offer students access to virtual learning platforms and industry mentoring.
Through these local and state-wide collaborations, we ensure that geographical location does not restrict a student’s potential. At Glenroy Public School, each student is encouraged to identify their unique strengths, extend their capabilities, and pursue a personalised learning journey that supports their individual ambitions and talents.
